Counselling is a process through which you can explore any areas of concern. These could include present difficulties, past trauma or anxiety about the future.
Counselling does not involve giving you advice. The aim of the Counsellor is to listen in a non-judgemental way to enable you to talk about your feelings and experiences. It is a collaborative process concentrating on what is important to you. Counselling goes at your pace and according to your needs; this may be a single session, a short series of sessions, or support over a longer period of time.
Confidentiality is of utmost importance. Your counsellor abides by an ethical framework and it is only in very rare circumstances (the risk of harm to you or someone else) that information may have to be shared with others. In accordance with ethical requirements, each counsellor meets on a regular basis with an outside consultant. No names are used and the purpose is to enhance the counselling and safeguard the welfare of you, the client.
The Counsellors work with individual students on any topic or range of concerns. It really is true that there is no issue too small or too large to discuss with a Counsellor.
It takes courage to acknowledge that you are experiencing difficulties and to seek support. This is recognised by the Counsellors who endeavour to create a welcoming environment in which you can explore your thoughts and feelings.
If you are not sure if counselling is right for you (or at this time in your life), you can meet a Counsellor for an initial session to discuss your needs.
The Counsellors are Jean Harris and Myfanwy Williams. Jean Harris is available Monday to Thursday, and Myfanwy Williams on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday morning. Myfanwy Williams offers counselling through the medium of Welsh as well as English.
To arrange an appointment, please call at the Reception Desk in Student Services or telephone extension 6830 (01267 676830 from outside University).
Appointments are available throughout the day Monday to Thursday, and on Friday mornings. The majority of appointments are scheduled in advance, but the Counsellors aim to make a few “emergency appointments” available each week in case a student is in urgent need of support.
You can choose counselling through the medium of Welsh or English.
